Hi. I just tuned 18 last week and although I've been on dating apps before I've never met anyone off them. Do you have any suggestions for which apps are good to meet someone. I'm not ready for sex. I just want to meet other people my own age. Thanks.
Thanks for your message! I'm Justin, a member of the OutLife Support Team. It can sometimes be hard to find other LGBTQ+ people in your area. I've definitely been there! Coming from a small town in the Midlands I struggled to find other gay people near me.
Thankfully though things have changed quite a bit since I was 18. There are tonnes of ways to connect with the LGBTQ+ community online and offline, depending on which you feel most comfortable with.
You don't mention where you're based, but if you're in the UK, you should be able to connect with people that aren't too far away. Below I've provided a few suggestions that you might find useful for finding people your age.
These can be a great way to meet other people who are around your age:
If you don't like the sound of a youth group, then there are other options too
- Our members often meet other people through LGBT clubs and societies, of which there are a tonne in the UK. You could try searching for someone in your local area (like a local LGBT singing or dancing group?). You can also try Meetup, which lists thousands of LGBT groups online: www.meetup.com/topics/lgbtfriends/
- If you're at university, or you're about to go, then it's definitely worth checking to see if your Student's Union has an LGBTQ+ society. Most do!
- As for the dating apps themselves, you don't mention which ones you've used before, but many offer the option of saying that you're simply looking for friendships, and not anything romantic or sexual.
I hope some of the above proves useful and you find what you're looking for. If you've got any questions then feel free to shout us again! I'm sure our members will also chime in soon with some helpful suggestions.
